In Europe, specific fighting techniques were developed and taught in specialized institutions, “fencing schools”. The left hand dagger was developed specifically for use with the rapier. It had to be resistant to heavy blows from all directions without bending or breaking, but still be light and well-balanced.
The blade of the dagger was probably made in Solingen (Germany), a famous center for quality blade making up till today. The left hand dagger is characterized by long cross-guard, “quillon”, used to divert the opponent's blows. The guard has functional turned edge to catch the point of the opponent's sword or dagger. The hilt is beautifully chiselled and partially gilded “parcel gilt”. In addition, the entire body of the blade is long and slender, making the weapon not only in terms of its practical application, but also for its artistic qualities.
