Jean Pillement (1728–1808) specialized in landscapes and Chinoiserie. He was widely known in the 1760s because the engravings of his works were widely distributed throughout England and Europe. Royals from Spain, Portugal, England, Austria and Poland had invited him successively to create decorative paintings at their palaces and royal estates. He was even dubbed “pictor regius” (the “royal painter”) by the king of Poland and employed by Marie-Antoinette (1755–1793).The four decorative panels collected by Chimei Museum are typical decorative works created by Pillement.

Among the four panels, festoon, ribbons, fruits, and leaves form the center and the frame. Depicting stories of Greek gods, red figures in black background that often appear on painted Greek vases can also be seen on the ribbon at the bottom. Mythical creatures such as a melusine, sphinx, and griffin stand on both sides of the large vases or carry a poetic plate that depicts ancient ruins with their head. On top of them are elegant symmetrical thin twigs curling upward. A variety of flowers in full blossom are arranged in the high-neck vases painted on the center. Quasi-embossed patterns in black background over the vases depict Pan, a Greek god of human body and hindquarters, a countrywoman holding a sickle and bundle grain, the symbol of field formed by a straw hat, a pastoral staff and a shotgun, and a woman making sacrifices. On the top of the corner hold are angels in pairs carrying garlands either by themselves or together, some kiss or hug each other while clustering together with flowers. The decoration on the center and the frame is made up of mythical creature, birds, butterflies and dancing little angels. The pastoral landscape, the combination of graceful lines, delicate floral vines and mythical figures reveal a sort of light and picturesque rococo beauty. (Li Pen YU)
