Michel Martin Drolling (1786-1851) was a late 19th century French artist of the Neo-Classicism school. Drolling studied under his father Martin Drolling (1752-1817) and Neo-Classicism master Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). He was deeply inspired by David and inherited his love of Neo-Classic historical themes and detailed artistic style. In 1810, Drolling won the Prix de Rome with the Wrath of Achilles. Soon after he caught the attention of King Charles X (1757-1836) and was appointed to create wall murals for official buildings.

Portrait of the Artist was a work exhibited at the official salon of 1819. The man in the portrait appears in a standing three-quarter right-facing pose. He is gazing in a steady manner at the audience and he shows a sense of determination. Although there is not much emotion in his expression, his narrow, slanting nose, pale facade and upright posture all suggest the courtly grace and good looks of the young man. The short hairstyle, the upright collar, the waistcoat and the double-rows of buttons on his tailcoat showing the broad chest, all of which display the status of a refined gentleman from the late 18th to early 19th century. The pen and book in the hands of the man further affirm his status as a writer or artist. Using clean lines and delicate colors, the artist depicts the determined gaze and the upright posture of the man, creating an almost statue-like stateliness. But the slightly raised right index finger exhibits a hint of repose. Drolling painstakingly carves out the different textures of the man's skin, hair and clothing, making the painting particularly realistic. It reflects the refinement and realism favored in the Neo-Classicism style. (Yu Han HSU)
