Alexis Joseph Perignon (1806-1882) was a French artist from the 19th century of the Neoclassicist school. He was most known for his portrait paintings. Perignon favored the refined Neoclassicist techniques and styles in his portrait works. He created sumptuous and realistic effects and atmospheres. His most outstanding feature was that he was able to clearly capture the characteristics and aura of each individual subject.

Portrait of Madame de Blanzay is one of the portraits painted by Perignon. Madame de Blanzay is turned to the right sitting on a green chair and facing three quarters to the front. She has clear bright eyes, a straight nose and wears a soft smile. Together with her rosy complexion, the beauty and elegance of Madame de Blanzay is presented perfectly. The lady's hair covers her ears on either side, plaited and folded about her head, shaping the contours of her face. This serves as a reflection of hairstyles fashionable in the 19th century. The low-cut white ball-gown revealing her shoulders and the top of her chest, and the corset emphasizing her waist present dress style at the time, which favores showing the contours of the neck, shoulders and waist. The pink cape lying across the right arm of the lady brings a burst of color to the pure white of the dress, while the fur lining adds a sense of sophistication.

Using refined techniques, Perignon depicts the features and graceful expression of Madame de Blanzay perfectly, and he vividly presents the textures of the silk dress and fur cape. All of these express the realistic style of Neoclassicism. In the overall arrangement, we can see the artist's careful composition. For example, the upside-down triangle of the jaw line, the low-cut bodice and the slanted line decor, and the lightly clasped hands in the lap all complement the triangular form of the hair and hanging cape so that the image is both balanced and full of rhythm.
