尚-巴普堤斯特-卡米爾.柯洛(Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, 1796-1875)是十九世紀法國最具影響力的風景畫家,畫中有獨特的田園詩意和朦朧之美。帆船與船伕是柯洛相當喜愛的主題,畫中的大樹帶出停泊後方的帆船與小屋,以及左側遠方行駛的小船與河岸。畫面以綠色調勾勒林木原野,並以淺灰調和藍白色系表現天際與水面,交融的色澤烘托出柔和、朦朧且天水交映的浪漫氣氛。
柯洛原遵循學院派歷史風景畫的概念與原則進行創作。然而,隨著他到歐洲各地累積實地觀察、寫生的經驗後,柯洛逐漸對光影與色調間的表現產生興趣。1850年以後,柯洛轉向描繪富含田園詩意的風景畫,而畫中獨特的模糊、朦朧之感,則是他為人所熟知的特色之一。
現藏於奇美博物館的【島嶼尖端的渡船伕】即為柯洛晚期偏好的主題,如帆船、船伕等。畫中一水兩岸式的構圖、以大樹為焦點的安排,與樹大人小的對比皆屬柯洛風景畫的典型手法。以畫中央的大樹為起點,其沿左上側綿延彎曲的枝幹走向,除了呼應著河岸左下右上的動勢而達畫面平衡外,更在藍天的襯托下凸顯出其聳立於畫中的氣勢。此外,遠方渺小的帆船與岸景亦在大樹的襯托下暗示出畫面空間,而橫向的前景河岸、河流與雲朵則層層堆砌營造出景深的層次。
整體畫面以表現林木原野的綠色調,和天水相映的藍、白色調為主。柯洛以不同深淺的綠色調刷出茂密的葉子,並以淺綠、淺黃或橘色的點筆觸畫出部分的葉子凸顯林木的逼真性。同樣的手法亦見於河岸上的草叢與草地,而點綴於其中藍、白與黃等色點,以及藏身於綠色草叢間的紅帽白衣船夫則更添畫面變化。遠方寬廣的藍天與水面以淺灰色進行調和,使得色澤間彼此交融、模糊了分界,除了讓整體畫面籠罩在柔和、寧靜與朦朧的氣氛當中,更忠實地呈現柯洛晚期風景畫的典型風格。(徐鈺涵)
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was one of the most influential landscape painters of 19th-century France. Originally he followed the academic concepts and principles of historical paintings for his creation; howerer, after his travels throughout Europe and accumulation of outdoor sketching experience, he gradually became interested in variations of shades and tones. After 1850, he turned to landscape paintings with pastoral scenes. The unique hazy and dreamy effect in his paintings was one of his well-known characteristics.
This work includes some of Corot’s favorite subjects of his later stage, those of boats and boatmen. The composition of a river dividing the land into halves, the focus on a large tree, and the contrast between the big tree and the tiny human figures, all are typical of Corot’s landscapes. The whole painting features three colors: the sylvan green of the woods, the azure and white of the sky and of its reflection on the water. Shades of green are varied to enhance the foliage of the thriving woods, among which dots of pale green, pale yellow or orange highlight the structure of the leaves to enhance the vividness of the woods.
The same skill is applied to represent the grass and meadow on the riverbanks. In the scene, dots of blue, white and yellow, as well as the red-hatted boatman in white hidden by the green grass, add variation to the view. The vast blue sky blends with the expanse of greyish water; the colors are so harmoniously mixed that edges blur and the whole picture is enveloped in a gentle, tranquil and hazy atmosphere, faithfully reflecting the style of Corot’s later landscapes.( Yu Han HSU)
