Netherlandish artist Salomon van Ruysdael (1600/03–1670) was already recognized as a country landscape artist in his youth. But the works which made his name are his atmospheric riverside landscapes. This painting belongs in that category.

The artist situates the flat horizon in the bottom quarter of the painting, the other three quarters of the scene is made up of the sky to broaden the perspective. The riverbank meanders diagonally across from the left of the foreground to the right, gradually disappearing into the skyline at the right of the scene. At the same time, the gradually disappearing yacht also adds depth to the image. The horizontal lines of the riverbank, the ferry, the low skyline and the layers of clouds together with the vertical lines of the woods at the left of the scene, the figures on the boat, the boat itself and its reflection in the water form a stable structure in the image. The clear reflection hints at the calmness of the current, enhancing a relax atmosphere. The twisted claw-like branches and leaves extending across the surface of the river from the left bank to the right adds dynamism to the scene along with the layers of clouds coming from the right to the left. The scattered huts on the banks, people riding away from the river in their carriage, Nijenrode Castle to the right of the background, and the signs of people by a church in the distance all add a sense of vibrancy to the scene. On the ferry are both male and female passengers standing about or sitting and chatting with each other. There are also herds of cattle and travelers and river craft with ducks and gliding water birds.

The riverbank in the foreground and the ferry are depicted in a warm brown-green tone, while the surface of the water, the yachts and the sky are in a mixture of gray-blue, powder brown, gray-green, and gray-white. The reflection of the sky in the water serves to unify and integrate the colors. The only bright tones of color are the streak of powder yellow on the castle and the red outfits of the people on the ferry, adding a hint of vitality to an otherwise tranquil scene.(Li Pen YU)
