This violin came from the hands of Nicolò Amati, who was the third-generation master of the Amati family in the Cremona tradition. This violin, his earliest known masterwork, is thought to have been made just before a plague epidemic struck northern Italy.

War and the plague caused large numbers of deaths, and among the famous luthiers at the time, only Nicolò Amati survived. The apprentices that he hired later on made it possible for the secrets of their exquisite craft to be passed down to later generations; many of these apprentices also became important luthiers in their own right. Nicolò Amati’s works have an elegant, bright, sweet timbre. In order to increase the resonance, he lengthened the violin body, so that the dimensions became extremely close to those of the violins made today. Thus Nicolò Amati is considered a key figure to have set the standard dimensions for the violin today. The fame of the Cremona school of luthiers spread far and wide under the half-century of his leadership, and Cremona became the most important center for violin-making.
