【鐵修斯戰勝人馬獸】是巴里最重要的創作;原作完成於1846-1848年間,1850年曾在沙龍展展出。這個作品以希臘神話故事為背景:鐵修斯受邀參與拉比特族(Lapiths)王子的婚禮,遇上人馬獸(Centaur)醉酒鬧事。這件雕塑刻劃的正是勇敢壯碩的鐵修斯上前與人馬獸搏鬥的情景。他跳到人馬獸的背上,雙腿用力下壓,一手使勁壓住人馬獸的脖子,一手則高舉棒子準備給予重擊。而受到攻擊的人馬獸痛得仰首轉身,雙手試圖抓向鐵修斯作最後的掙扎,伸直的右前腿和向上揚起的左前腿,生動地表現出人馬獸原本疾速奔馳卻猛然遭到壓制的刺激時刻。人獸搏鬥時緊繃的肌肉線條,不僅展現出雕塑家對人體與動物的研究,也表達十足的戲劇張力,具體呈現浪漫主義時期強調情緒與戲劇性的特色。
這件奇美典藏的【鐵修斯戰勝人馬獸】另有一段特殊經歷。早在1894年,美國一群巴里的仰慕者集資製作大型的【鐵修斯戰勝人馬獸】作為巴里紀念碑,設置於巴黎聖路易島上;可惜二次大戰期間遭到熔毀。1999年巴黎市政府為了重建紀念碑,跨國向奇美商借這件作品前去複製放大。在奇美贊助之下,2011年紀念碑重新矗立在聖路易島上,並在紀念碑後方以繁體中文字註明這段故事。
One of Barye's most important pieces, Theseus Fighting Centaur Bianor, was created between 1846-1848 and exhibited in the Salon in 1850. Based on a story in Greek mythology, Theseus was invited to the wedding of Prince of the Lapiths where the drunken Centaur was causing trouble. Theseus jumps onto the Centaur's back, squeezing it with his knees as he grabs the Centaur's throat with one hand, and raises a rod to strike him with the other. The body of the Centaur distorts in pain as he clutches at Theseus in the final struggle. The extended right leg and the lifted left leg in the front suggest vividly that the Centaur had been running when he was abruptly overpowered by Theseus. The taut muscles of the combating figures not only convey the dedicated anatomy that Barye had gone through, but also show the dramatic tension of the piece. Above all, it displays the emotional and dramatic characteristics of the Romantic Period.
Theseus Fighting Centaur Bianor in CHIMEI's collection comes with an anecdote. In 1894, a group of Barye admirers from the United States raised funds to produce a large-scale version of Theseus Fighting Centaur Bianor in memory of this talented sculptor on the Île Saint-Louis in Paris. Unfortunately, it was melted down during World War II. Wishing to restore it, in 1999, the Parisian Government requested to borrow the sculpture from CHIMEI Museum to produce an enlarged replica. With the support of CHIMEI Museum, the replica was placed at the Île Saint-Louis memorial in 2011. To express gratitude to CHIMEI, the origin of this new replica is inscribed in traditional Chinese on the back of its pedestal.
