Guillaume Seignac (1870-1924) was an Academism artist from the late 19th century. He was especially talented in depicting female characters from Greco-Roman mythology. He often used female forms to represent “confidence,” “vanity.” and other abstract concepts.

The Awakening of Psyche is currently part of the Chimei collection. The theme is the character Psyche from Greco-Roman mythology. It depicts the moment that Psyche is awakened by her lover Cupid after falling into a deep sleep when she opens a box containing the Beauty of Persephone, Queen of the Dead. In the painting, a nude Psyche is standing next to a bed. Appearing from her back is a pair of golden-patterned, blue butterfly wings, part of her traditional representation. Psyche's eyes are slightly open with her head turned up, looking to the left. Her left hand is stroking her long golden hair while her right arm is lifted up to her neck as she stretches herself languidly after awakening from a deep sleep. Her slightly up-tilted head emphasizes and extends the line of her neck while the lifted left arm elongates the lines of her torso and enhances her graceful posture. In addition, her head and upper body turns slightly to the left, forming a classic contrapposto pose. The perfect S-contour shapes Psyche into an elegant classical sculpture.

The artist places Psyche in a bedroom with white curtains and white bedcovers. The pure white tone along with the light coming from the top left give off a bright atmosphere and complements the delicate pink skin and graceful posture of Psyche. The roses in varied tones of red and pink add to the delicacy and refinement of the scene. Seignac stays true to the background of the story and adds Ionic columns and oval patterns on white cloth common in ancient Greece. To add decoration and a sense of splendor to the scene, Seignac even depicts patterns on the wooden bed and the animal skin on the floor. (Yu Han HSU)
